MORCHARD BISHOP SS 70 NE 5/110 - Ingo Down Farmhouse - II
Farmhouse, possibly 2 cottages originally. Late C17, extended in early C20. Plastered cob and rubble; rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatched roof. 3-room plan house facing south. The central and right (east) end room are late C17 and were possibly 2 one-room cottages originally. Left (west) end is early C20 extension. End stacks to outer rooms and rear diagonal corner stack to middle room. 2 storeys. Irregular 5 window front, the left 3 being casements without glazing bars and the thatch lifting over first floor half dormers, and the right 2 being late C19 casements some with glazing bars and first floor windows including C19 rectangular panes of leaded glass. Main door at left end with C20 porch. Glazed C20 door in middle of extension. Former door on left side of middle room now blocked by window. Roof gable-ended at both ends. Interior: the 2 C17 rooms are partially divided by remains of oak plank-and-muntin screen with chamfered and scroll stopped muntins; and comtemporary framing is thought to survive behind plaster on first floor. Right (east) end room has late C17 chamfered and straight cut stopped cross beam. Stone fireplace has plain oak lintel and brick side oven to left. Alcove to left was site of original winder stair. Cream oven alcove in rear wall. Centre room has unfinished crossbeam and rubble corner fireplace has plain oak lintel and an oven on left side. Original roof survives. It is 2 bays and truss has pegged lap-jointed collar and through purlins but because lower principals are buried in crosswall, it is not possible to determine whether truss is jointed cruck or A-frame form.
