STANSGATE ROAD
Wall approx. 30 metres north of Stansgate Abbey Farmhouse
GV
II
Wall. Rebuilt at unknown date of C12 origin. C19/C20 red brick south buttress,
C12 moulded and shafted stone fragments, septaria and red tile, approx. 11 feet
high. This is possibly the wall mentioned RCHM 2 as adjoining the south wall of
the former C16 Stansgate Abbey Farmhouse and part of the east wall of the east
range of the cloister of the former C12 Cluniac Priory, founded by Ralph, son of
Brian, as a cell to Lewes Priory. The Priory was dissolved c. 1525 and the
church was subsequently used as a barn, this has now been demolished and only
this section of wall remains above ground.
