Details
TQ 2781 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER SUSSEX GARDENS, W2 53/11 (north-west side) Wilson House (Nos 5.2.70 38 to 76) GV II Terrace. Early C19. Brown brick in Flemish bond, stucco ground floor, outer bays channelled stucco. Stucco cornice and further cornice to parapet. 4 storeys and basement. 12-bay central breakforward with 8-bay wings and further 6-bay breakforward to each side. Central bays have round-arched arcading containing off-centre entrance and round-arched sashes, some with glazing bars with radial glazing in the heads. Other ground floor entrances replaced by sash windows. First floor: iron balconies. Sashes with glazing bars to central breakforward, architraves with hoods on consoles. The 8-bay wings have flat gauged brick arches and the outer 6-bay architraves with hoods and pediments to the outer windows. Above, mainly sashes with glazing bars. Cornice at 3rd floor level. Iron railings to basement. Known originally as Grand Junction Road, Sussex Gardens formed an important feature of the original layout of Bayswater.
