Details
WEM RURAL C.P. SOULTON ROAD SJ 53 SW (north side) 6/159 Lacon Hall - - II Farmhouse, now house. Probably C15 core, remodelled late C16, mid- to late C18 and early C19 with later additions and alterations. Rendered brick concealing and replacing timber frame; slate roof. Original plan apparently consisted of 3-bay open hall (floored over late C16) with gabled cross-wing on left (now truncated) projecting to rear. Late C18 range projecting to rear at junction between hall range and former cross-wing and late C20 addition at right-angles rear on right. 2 storeys with dentilled eaves cornice; floor band to former cross- wing. 1:3 windows, mid-C20 casements, those to ground floor with C19 segmental heads. C19 gabled porch over 4-panel door with rectangular barred overlight roughly to centre of hall range. Massive stepped external end stack with paired and rebated shaft to front gable of cross-wing and integral end stack to right of hall range; external end stack to rear of late C18 addition. Massive stack to cross-wing has pigeon nesting ledges and infilled opening abutting to top. Interior: jowled wall posts (mainly exposed on first floor) divide house into hall range of 3 wide framed bays and cross-wing of 2, probably orignally more, bays. Deep-chamfered ceiling beams and richly moulded joists on both ground and first floors to hall and cross-wing. Tie beam to left truss of hall range has sawn-off closely spaced posts, suggesting presence of former screen and the jettied beam to left may be part of a gallery, originally approached from cross-wing. C18 staircase with panelling to sides, moulded handrail and later stick balusters to rear left corner of hall range. Roof structure, entirely remodelled above tie beam level, has late C18 or early C19 queen-posts reusing timbers from an earlier roof; C17 rectangular oak panelling (not in situ) also in roof space. C20 addition to rear is not of special architectural interest. The house was formerly moated.
