Details

PREES C.P. STATION ROAD (north SJ 5433-5533 side) 14/109 Fernyleas (Formerly - listed as Ferneylees) 25.4.75 GV II Farmhouse. Circa 1600 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with painted brick infill, plinth and additions; machine tile and slate roofs. Main range of framed bays with central baffle- entry; 3 gables to rear, 2 to right C17 and that to left mid-C18. 2 storeys with gable-lit attics to main range and centre rear gable. Framing: main range; square panels, 5 from cill to wall-plate (2 lower panels replaced by brick to front) with jowled wall posts and long straight tension braces to gable ends; these are slightly jettied to attic and have projecting double-purlin ends; positions of infilled 3-light mullion windows visible on ground and first floors of right gable end. Similar framing to rear gables, again with hewn jettying to top storey; jowled wall posts to centre gable. Left gable is brick and has continuous floor band. Two-window front, late C19 three-light casements to first floor and early C20 three-light windows to ground floor; gabled dormers directly above in middle of roof slope. Central entrance, C19 boarded door under contemporary gabled hood. Red brick ridge stack immediately to left rebuilt mid-C20. Interior: timber frame partially exposed throughout with chamfered and moulded ceiling beams to both ground- and first-floor rooms. Massive stack has partly infilled inglenook fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel to left ground- floor room and C17 stone fireplace with segmental arch to right ground- floor room. This room has an inset C18 oak wall cupboard with pilastered round-headed arch to back wall and a C17 panelled door leading to centre gable. Oak dog-leg staircase to right of stack has moulded handrail on first floor. Plank and muntin doors with fleur-de-lys pointed strap hinges throughout, including to attic, where brick stepping of stack is visible. Main range has collar and tie beam roof in 3 bays with double purlins and straight windbraces; similar roof in 2 bays to centre gable.
