TQ 2880 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER SHEPHERD MARKET Wl 80/129 Nos 1 to 23 (odd) and No 29 (including Nos 2 to 5.2.70 14 Shepherd Street) GV II Eastern and northern ranges of a market block of shops and houses. Dated 1860 and a uniform rebuilding of major portion of the C18 market complex. Yellow brick and stucco rectangular block with passageway through middle and splayed corners; slate roofs. 3 storeys. The individual fronts are 2 windows wide to east with one window returns Shepherd Street), 3 windows wide to east with one window returns (Nos 1 to 5 odd) and one window wide to north (Nos 7 to 23 odd). Simple pilastered shop fronts with corniced fascias, that of No 8 Shepherd Street altered mid C20. Recessed sash windows, some retaining glazing bars, under gauged arches. 2 enriched architraved windows over passageway with date above. Crowning entablature around block with dentil cornice and blocking course, with panel to centre on east front inscribed "Shepherd Market". Nos 15 and 17 are in centre of block flanking the passageway. Shepherd Market was laid out c 1735 and built c. 1746, the designer, builder and entrepreneur being Edward Shepherd, who built on the Grosvenor and Cavendish estates. No 29 c.1840, now forms part of No 14 Shepherd Street and is stuccoed with slate mansard, 2 storeys, with one corniced window on 1st floor above altered shop.
