TQ 2980 CITY OF WESTMINSTER ST. JAMES'S STREET SW1 81/116 (West side) No 86, (The Constitutional 5.2.70 Club) GV II Gentlemen's Club, 1862 by James Knowles, junior, for the Thatched House Club, later Civil Service Club and Union Club. Sculpture by Daymond. Brown stone, slate roof. Very ornate High Victorian elevation with Italianate and Renaissance details. 4 storeys, basement and dormered mansard. 4 bays on ground floor including doorway to right in semicircular arched openings with hood moulds and carved imposts, and the spandrels and wall surface between richly carved with spreading foliage which also climbs up the large corbel supporting the central 2 storey oriel, flanked by round headed 1st floor windows, square headed on 2nd floor, the top floor with enriched arcaded windows. Bold crowning cornice and round arched dormers. Interior with equally bold stuccowork and mouldings. The Dining Room has reset early C19 chimney piece from Carlton House Terrace.
