Details
1. ROXWELL THE STREET 5213 (East Side) ROXWELL Dukes House TL 6408 26/445 29.12.52.
II 2. A manor house on this site is mentioned in Doomsday Book. The present house was built in the Cl6 and was altered and added to in 1666 by Thomas Arthur Crush. It is said that the workers on the roof saw the Great Fire of London. There are cross wings on the north and south ends and Cl7 gabled additions on the west side. The east side is almost completely altered, with C2O fenestration and sham timber- framing. The house retains its original shape and is picturesque. 2 storeys and attics. The windows are C20 casements with leaded lights. Roof tiled. The chief external features are the 3 fine original chinmey stacks, each with 3 octagonal shafts on a rectangular base with a deep band of moulded brick quatrefoil ornamentation. 2 of the stacks have spurred caps and another stack is rebuilt in facsimile.
