Small farmhouse or cottage; unoccupied at time of inspection (September 1995). Probably mid to later C17; altered in C19, with added rear wing. Square-panelled timber-framing with later brick nogging, the front and north gable walls rendered and painted with imitation square-panelled half-timbering and the south gable wall rebuilt in brick and rendered (probably in C20); slate roof with C19 cusped barge-boarding and brick chimneys. Single-depth 3-bay plan on roughly north-south axis facing west, with shallow rear wing added to southern half. One and a half storeys with 3 dormer windows, now almost symmetrical (except for the chimneys), with a central doorway protected by a C19 timber-framed gabled porch, 2 square windows at ground floor and 3 gabled dormers above, all these windows with altered glazing and the dormers with wavy barge-boards. Ridge chimney offset right, added chimney in front of ridge at left end. The left (north) gable wall has a large C19 brick buttress, exposed timber framing to the rear of this including a rail, 2 sets of studs and a passing brace over these; and a square window above. The south gable wall has 2 rectangular 6-pane windows at ground floor and a square window above. Rear: the northern half has exposed timber framing consisting of a corner post and 2 full-height wall-posts with straight up-bracing to the wallplate, intermediate rails and studs, and a wide slightly curved lintel at a higher level in the north bay, with a stud beneath its centre and a 2-light casement to the right of this. INTERIOR: the south bay has a hollow-chamfered spine beam with square undecorated joists tenoned into it, and an inglenook bressumer with roll-moulding on the face (probably a re-used C16 beam); and in the added service wing timber-framing of the original external wall is visible. The centre bay has a brick axially partition beneath the spine beam, with a C19 elliptical archway through it and a C19 staircase to the rear. The north bay has a chamfered spine beam and square undecorated joists, and an inserted brick chimney breast containing a good mid C19 cast-iron fireplace with a round-headed opening framed by Ionic colonnettes. On the upper floor the centre and north bays have wind-braced purlins; the cross-frame between these bays has an inserted doorway severing the tie-beam, with added collars attached to both sides above the doorway, and in the roof-space the apex of the principal rafters (now approx. 30cm below the present roof) is closed with wattle-and-daub, all of which features suggest that the north bay was formerly separate from the domestic accommodation of the centre and south bays. The floor level of the north bay is lower, and that of the south bay higher, than the centre, the north and centre bays having old floor-boards laid in short lengths. HISTORY: probably formerly a 2-bay dwelling with a shippon at the north end.
