Kirkby Common Farmhouse
(Formerly listed as Kirby Common Farmhouse)

Farmhouse. Early to mid C18; altered and enlarged. Coursed squared
sandstone, slate roof with brick chimneys. Transitional double-depth 2-unit
plan (ie. inclusive of outshut). Three storeys at front but low 2-storey
rear under catslide roof. Symmetrical 2-bay facade, rendered at ground
floor; central doorway with raised surround including long-and-short
jambstones and large fluted keystone; 2 windows on each floor, all with
raised surrounds, those at ground and 1st floors probably formerly cross-
windows but now 2-light casements, those at 2nd floor with double-chamfered
surrounds and probably formerly mullioned but now 2-light horizontal-sliding
sashes. Gable copings with shaped kneelers, gable chimneys. Right-hand
return wall rendered, and an inserted window near the front corner. Rear;
former doorway altered as window, 2 small windows to the left and inserted
doorway between them (probably replacing formerly similar window); square
window above; vertical joint to left indicating extension of original
outshut.
Interior: housebody in 1st bay has large rectangular fireplaces central
staircase rising from front to rear in one flight on each level, with splat
balusters from the 1st landing, now partitioned from housebody and splat
balusters of 1st flight removed. (Item resembles Stockingate Farmhouse,
STOCKINGATE q.v.).
