Details

HEMSWORTH STATION ROAD SE41SW (west side) 5/55 No. 5 (Town End - Cottage) - II

Cottage. Probably early C17 or earlier, altered probably in C18 and subsequently. Timber framed construction, later cased in large coursed squared sandstone, with roof of stone slates (now coated) and pantiles. Two- unit plan with added rear outshut. Two low storeys and 2 bays; south front has 2 altered windows on each floor, those at ground floor vertical rectangular and those above square. Ridge chimney. Right-hand gable wall has glazed lean-to conservatory covering present entrance into outshut. Interior: visible remains of formerly timber-framed building include 2 of 3 wallposts in the rear wall, wallplates in front and rear walls, tie-beams at both ends and in the centre, and one pair of purlins; at the west end these terminate on a light tie beam or collar approx. 1½ metres from the gable wall (suggesting remains of former smoke bay or smoke hood). Stone staircase in outshut, rising along outside of former rear wall (suggesting formerly open structure, or ladder stair to loft).
