II
Church, 1871-2, by Slater and Carpenter at expense of C.G.Dewhurst, in late C13 manner. Rock-faced grey snecked rubble sandstone with steep grey slate roofs. 5-bay aisled nave with south porch, gabled south vestry with truncated chimney, apsidal chancel, north-east spire. Rose west window above 4 trefoiled lancets to aisles; clerestorey windows of 2 trefoiled lancets with quatrefoil plate tracery; chancel has heavy buttresses and early Geometrical windows to apse. Square tower of 3 stages carries octagonal belfry with 2-light traceried bell-openings and pinnacles on colonnettes, below corbel table which carries a stone spire with (in order upwards) sex-, quinque-, quatre-, trefoil and circular openings. Interior. Cream stone pillars with brown bases and caps carry brown clerestorey shafts which support arched collar-beam trusses of timber and iron. Lean-to aisle roofs have exposed rafters. Full-height shafts carry the stone vault of the chancel. Blank arcade of 3 trefoils beneath each window in apse. Glass in apse windows and south aisle window by Kempe.
