House and 2 attached cottages, now shop and workshop. Mid-late C18 by John Carr. Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roofs. House (No 38): 2 storeys, 3 x 2 1st-floor windows. Gable front: C 20 canted-bay window inserted between 2 original windows (blocked) the lintels still visible. 1st-floor windows, one blind, have plain- dressed wedge-shaped lintels originally cut with false voussoirs and projecting sills. Modillion pediment. Set in tympanum is blind oculus. Ridge stack to front of gable and rear. Doorway on left to shop in later C19 range (not of special interest). Rear: modillion pedimented gable. Right-hand return (fronts Harrogate Road): plinth. Doorway to left with window above and to both floors to right, all with monolithic lintels cut with false voussoirs and projecting sills. Cottages attached to right: single storey. 6 bays. Quoins to right. Each has doorway with monolithic jambs on plinths, tie-stones, and small window either side with large monolithic lintels and sills. Gable stack. No 38 is complementary to No 37 (q.v.).
