CHURCH STREET (West side)
The War Memorial and boundary wall between south and north-east gateways, Church of All Saints
GV
II
War memorial and boundary wall. Memorial designed by Henry Wilson and carved by stone mason W Micklewright of Norton Sub Hamdon, unveiled 23 April 1922; walling probably C19 or earlier. Walling on long curve, coursed roughly squared Ham stone with ashlars to changes of direction, chamfered ashlar tops, averaging 1.3 m high but dropping to 1 m high on either side of memorial, which breaches the wall, with curved returns north-westwards ending in low square piers with pumpkin finials framing 6 curved steps. Memorial about 4 m high, set on an octagonal step; the base octagonal with quasi-buttresses on angles, a tall shaft base with shouldered semi-circular topped memorial tablets, and then an octagonal shaft terminating in a somewhat Celtic style cross, the design carefully developed. The whole is a most important element in the streetscene, and in the setting of the church.
(Saunders, The Church of All Saints, Martock 1967).
