GV II

Market Cross. Medieval base, column dated 1741 all but plinth block entirely rebuilt in 1982. Ham stone ashlar, about 6 metres overall height. Circular base on circular step, with extra stones at cardinal points, then a square plinth block, stepped, supporting a fluted Tuscan column, said to have been copied from one at Wilton; on this a block with 4 sundial faces, one of which bears the 1741 date, with rod gnomons, surmounted by a ball finial crowned with a wrot-iron weathervane. The upper column thought to have been added by the then Lord of the Manor. (Pooley, Old Crosses of Somerset, 1872).
