LOWER HEYFORD MARKET SQUARE SP4824 (East side) 10/65 Bell Inn 26/11/51 GV II
Public house. Late c17/early C18, altered C19. Coursed squared marlstone rubble; artificial stone-slate roof with rubble-and-brick gable stacks. 4-unit plan of 2 builds plus subsidiary ranges 2 storeys plus attic. 3 bays to left of 5-window front are taller and have a regular arrangement of openings with a central doorway; most windows are enlarged with 6-pane C19 sashes below stone flat arches, but 2 older casements remain at first floor. 2 bays to right have, at ground floor, 3-light casements with flat arches, and at first floor have 2-light casements with wooden lintels. Both sections are raised over a cellar. Right gable wall steps around large chimney projection, partly concealed by a lower subsidiary range. Rear of 3-bay section has a tall gabled stair projection which has a narrow window extending the full height. Interior: Small open fireplaces stop-chamfered beams. (VCH: Oxfordshire, Vol VI, p182)
