Details
LOWER HEYFORD MARKET SQUARE SP4824 (South side) 10/67 College Farmhouse 26/11/51 (Formerly listed as Knapton's Farmhouse) GV II
Farmhouse now house. Late C17/early C18, extended C19 and altered C20. Coursed limestone and marlstone rubble with wooden lintels and some ashlar dressings; concrete plain-tile roof with brick stacks. 3-unit through-passage plan with rear service wing. 2 storeys. Regular 4-window front has 3-light casements except to bay 3 where there is a 2-light window above the entrance; the upper windows retain wooden lintels and C18/early-C19 iron casements, but the lower windows have newer casements with concrete lintels. The roof has gable stacks plus a ridge stack to right of centre. Right gable wall has large ashlar quoins and returns to a short rear wing which continues as a lower service range. Rear has a C19 stair wing in the angle of the ranges, and the lower range retains a small 2-light wood-mullioned window. Interior: Large inglenook fireplace backing onto through passage; some chamfered beams. (VCH: Oxfordshire, Vol VI, p183)
