COLTON FINSTHWAITE SD 38 NE 7/39 Rose Cottage and Ferndale Cottage

II

2 houses. Late C17 or C18. Roughcast stone with slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 bays to Ferndale, 3 bays to Rose Cottage. Ferndale Cottage has ground floor casement window with fire window to right; 1st floor sashed windows with vertical glazing bars. Half-glazed door. Rose Cottage has 6-light wooden chamfered mullioned window to 1st bay of ground floor with fire window to left; 3rd bay has casement window. 1st floor has 3-light and 4-light wooden chamfered-mullion windows and casement window. Entrance in gabled timber porch has wide boards and strap hinges. Gable-end stacks and squat cross-axial stack. Rear has gabled wing with re-entrant stair wing under catslide roof to left and end C20 extension; rear of Ferndale has 2-light window. Interior of Rose Cottage has some wide- boarded doors; stone fireplace, chamfered beams and 1st floor stud and plaster partitions. Interior of Ferndale not inspected but said to have upper cruck truss.
