Mausoleum. Mid C19, possibly by William Burn. Limestone ashlar with limestone roof. Rectangular chapel above burial vault. Entrance to N end. Norman style. Flight of 7 stone steps flanked by plain stone plinth, leading to double-leaf door. 2 orders of shafts to doorway with cushion capitals, roll-moulded round-arched head, continuous narrow sunk quadrant moulding innermost and hoodmould. Blank arches either side of door with 1 order of shafts, roll-moulded round-arched head and hoodmoulds. Roll-mould circular window to gable with hoodmould and beakhead label stops. Sides have 3 pairs of blank windows with roll-moulded round-arched heads and hoodmoulds with label stops. South end has triple window with stepped round-arched heads, blank below transom with diaper patterns. Foliated gable coss (renewed). Hollow-chamfered and roll-moulded stone eaves and gables. Roll-moulded plinth, cill band and moulded impost band. INTERIOR: chapel has black and white tiled floor in a trompe l'oeil pattern and stained glass to gable window. Brick-lined vault with 2 arched double tomb screens either side. Brick tunnel vault. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached fleur-de-lys headed railings. HISTORICAL NOTE: believed to date from 1869 and to have been designed by William Burn, architect of family home Branksome Towers (now demolished). Charles Packe began the laying out of Branksome Park.
