Obelisk at NGR SO 7523 3783

II*

Obelisk. Erected in 1812, probably to the designs of Sir R Smirke, for
2nd Lord Somers. Ashlar. Square panelled base on a tooled plinth; stepped
top over a plain band. Tapering shaft with pyramidal top. Inscribed panels
on each side of the base; on the north side to the Honourable Edward Cocks
who fell at Burgos, Spain in 1812 and in whose memory the obelisk was
erected; on the east side to Lord Chancellor Somers, died 1806; on the south
side to Ensign James Cocks, died 1758.
