Details
LITTlE HORKESLEY VINESSE ROAD 1. 5214 Church of St Peter and St Paul TL 93 SE 3/102 II GV 2. Mid C20 on the site of ancient church destroyed by enemy action 21.9.1940 Architects Duncan Clark RIBA, and the late Marshall Sissons. West tower in 3 stages with polygonal stair turret at north-east return rectangular windows with double at top stage, each stage has a chamfered string course, parapet is embattled. Nave with south aisle and north transept. Roofs low-pitched and either felted or metalled. Walls rendered. South aisle with 3 buttresses, chamfered string above footings which re-use ancient stones. Three windows in south wall under square hood moulds, each of 3 perpendicular lancets. Chancel has one pair of these windows above a flat topped extension to south. Red brick south porch, crow stepped gable and round arched entrance. Inside plain chamfered arcade of 2 thin and one returned tower piers. All furniture of modern oak. Effigies of the mid 13th century of 2 Knights clad in mail under surcoats, Crusaders with feet on dogs legs crossed, seven and a half feet tall. Members of the de Horkesley family. One Lady, feet on 2 dogs, addorsed, wearing gown and wimple. Tombs: John Swynborne, near the Knights and to the east, Purbeck Marble bearing brasses of 2 plate armoured Knights standing in attitudes of prayer, inscribed 1430. Included for group value.
