1/44 Barn and cow house about 30 yards south of _ Oldhouse Farmhouse
GV II
Barn and cow house. Probably late C17 or early C18, extended in early C19. Rubble, timber-frame, weatherboards, corrugated iron roof. Three bays extended to rear in contemporary full 3 bay length catslide, roofed lean- to and by one bay to north in early C19. Rubble base and end walls, stone flags-on-end form deep plinth about one panel high to east side. Entrance to centre of early 3 bays by full-height doors and to north extension by segmental headed openings with ledged door. North end gable has segmental head to loft. Rear extension has low oak-framed entrance from south end. Interior and frame: main 3-bay part has raking struts from ties on very heavy posts with elongated jowls. Southernmost tie-beam has cracked and been underpinned by rubble. Corner posts have short diagonal ties triangulating them with wall-plates. Stone flags-on-end with rails on top divide threshing floor from adjacent bays. Studs are massive, some supported by one foot high heel-plates and there are 2 panels between top of rubble base or stone flags and wall-plates. Rails are grooved on top and drilled underneath to take staves for wattle and so present weatherboards are alterations. The rear lean-to has heavy pegged half trusses consisting of low angled principal rafters linked to half tie-beams by vertical struts. Half ties are set on studs of west wall of barn into which open a pair of C17 or C18 ledged doors only about 6 feet high.
