House. 1887 (datestone). Slate stone rubble with brick dressings. Slate roof with
hipped ends. Brick axial stacks.
Built into side of a steeply sloping almost sheer bank with single storey elevation
to road and 2-storey elevation on lower side with deep battered base. The double
depth plan is well designed to accommodate the awkward site and to take advantage of
the magnificent views. The entrance is in the side wall on the left and leads
directly into a wide passage with stair against the bank (to left) and two reception
rooms on lower side (right) which are heated by back-to-back fireplaces. The service
room is accommodated to the rear of the stair, against the bank on the left.
Two storeys. Front elevation on lower side with battered base. 2 window front with
segmental arched openings to windows. Single storey bay window lights reception room
on front left and 2-storey canted bay in right-hand side wall looks out over valley.
Two 3-light mullion and transom windows on ground floor with ornate stone datestone
between. Two 3-light mullion and transom windows on first floor. The left hand side
elevation has flight of stone-rubble steps with iron railings leading down from the
road to the entrance.
Interior complete with good quality plasterwork. Reception rooms with plaster
cornices decorated with egg and dart motifs, floral trails in ceiling bands, marble
chimney-piece and timber chimney-piece with marbelling in panels, complete with C19
tiles and cast-iron grate. Open string stair. Complete set of chimney-pieces on
first floor.
Lewame forms part of a group of similar houses overlooking a steep-sided combe
leading down to Boscastle Harbour; the other houses are Valley View, Meachard,
Glenfinart, Penrowan, Belmont and Polqueens (qv).
