Pair of cottages. Mid/late C18. Painted limestone rubble, double-Roman tile roof with a brick stack to the right gable end. Each cottage originally single-unit plan, now with C20 extensions. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; originally symmetrical 2-window range. Paired central chamfered architraves to former doors are now blocked, entrance to No.44 is in the left-hand extension, that to No.45, which has C20 windows, is in the right return. No.44 has cyma-moulded stone-mullioned windows with C19 small-paned casements, 3-light to the 1st floor 2-light to the ground floor. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: The Butts was a place where archery was practised. (Chamberlain, Joseph A: Chippenham: Chippenham: 1976-: 8).
