Baptist church. c1856. Limestone ashlar with slate roof and moulded kneelers to gable ends. Classical style. Rectangular plan with lower rear block and single-storey lean-tos to the rear of each side. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical 3-window range. An entablature and high pediment span the facade which is articulated by pilasters with moulded plinths and capitals. The 1st floor has eared and shouldered architraves to fixed 16-pane windows, tall blind windows to the ground floor flank double doors in a moulded architrave with a shallow hood on consoles. The returns have three 16-pane segmental-arched windows to the 1st floor and similar flat-arched windows to the ground floor. The church hall to the rear, with an entrance on St Mary's Place, is lower. It has a small corbelled niche to the apex of the gable, three 9-pane windows to the 1st floor and three 16-pane windows to the ground floor. The lean-to to the north has a C19 4-panel door. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: ashlar walls approx 1m high are attached to each rear lean-to, they flank the site and terminate in ashlar piers with plinths, recessed panels to the sides, cornices and block tops, approx 1.5m high. A plinth wall with C20 railings sweeps downhill from left to right in 3 stages to each side of central C20 gates with similar piers. (Chamberlain, Joseph A: Chippenham: Chippenham: 1976-: 143).
