Shops, probably a former department store. c1910. Limestone
ashlar; roof unseen, probably slate; lead dome to corner bay.
Free style, mostly Baroque. L-shaped plan.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 8-window range in original openings.
C20 shop fronts with banded rustication to the pilasters, one
to the left (east), 2 to the right (north, in Foghamshire).
Plate-glass sash windows. The facade is spanned by a
projecting C20-style entablature, dentilled cornice and
blocking course.
A semicircular tower at the corner has 3 windows under a
hemi-spherical dome with a weather vane and ball topping a
tall finial; engaged Ionic columnns flank the 2nd-storey
windows; banded rustication to the 1st floor and paired Tuscan
columns to the ground floor flank a portico in antis over
double half-glazed doors.
To the sides, the 2 upper floors are articulated by Ionic
columns resting on the cornice of the shops below. The facade
to the left has a full-width 6-light semicircular window with
transom and keystone to the 1st floor which supports 2 small
central engaged Ionic columns on the 2nd floor. These are
flanked by 3-light segmental bay windows which project to meet
the entablature. The range to the far right is similar. To the
immediate right of the entrance the 2nd-floor bay is over a
similar taller one to the 1st floor with elaborate carving
around a plaque between floors.
