GV II

Terrace of 15 cottages. Dated 1858. Limestone ashlar, virtually continuous shallow-pitched slate roof, moulded ashlar stacks with moulded brick shafts to party walls. Double-depth plans with rear outshuts. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; each house is 2-window range. The terrace rises gently up hill, so roofs and 1st-floor bands step up slightly. Each house has raised surrounds and a keystone to the ground floor window, a door to the right with a shallow hood on consoles. To the centre of the terrace, between Nos 59 and 60, is a semicircular arch over a passage to the rear. Above it is a plaque "R.B. 1858". Originally each house had a 4-panel door and an overlight with margin panes or crossed glazing bars with a circle to the centre, and 8/8-pane sash windows. Some now have late C19 and C20 windows or doors but the character of the terrace remains. INTERIOR: not inspected. The most complete terrace of housing surviving from the industrial suburbs built up after the arrival of the railway. The initials "R.B." stand for Rowland Brotherhood, who had these built in order to house workers at his railway engineering works in Foundry Lane.
