ST9273SW MARKET PLACE 930-1/10/123 (East side) Group of 7 chest tombs approx 3m SE of south door of Church of St Andrew
GV II
Group of 7 chest tombs. C18. Limestone ashlar. Plinths, moulded flat tops, cornices and entablatures. i) Approx 3m from the door. Ogee-based shields, one to each end and 2 to each side, articulated by pilasters with raised-and-fielded panels. Worn inscription to Isaac and May. ii) Approx 6m south-east of the south door. Large oval panels to the sides with egg-and-dart moulding and putti to the top corners, flanked by pilasters with ribbons and fruit. Recessed corners with engaged vase columns. Plain ends. iii) Approx 6m south-east of the south door and to east of (ii) above, to which it is similar. iv) Approx 7m south-east of the south door, similar to (ii) above, and with carved pleated cloth pendants to the corners. Partly illegible inscription, possibly 1797. v) Approx 16m south-east of the south door. Similar to (i) above, and commemorates John Beames. vi) Approx 14m east of the south door. 2 square panels with chamfered corners flank pilasters with floral carving on both sides. Semicircular-arched panels to each end and raised-and-fielded panels to the corner pilasters. vii) Approx 13m south-east of the south door. Similar to (i) above, with foliate carving to the pilasters. Most inscriptions are illegible.
