GV II

Offices of the Chippenham Trustees. Dated 1887. Squared coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and plinth, slate roof and stone stack with cornice to left. Double-depth plan. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 4-window range. Horned 2/2-pane sash windows diminishing in height toward the top. The 3 windows to the left are stepped forward under a pediment with the town crest and "UNITY AND LOYALTY 1837-1887" in the tympanum; string courses between floors; chamfered rusticated quoins; moulded architraves to the windows, those to the upper floor with cornices, pediments to those on the lower floors. The recessed range to the right has a smaller pediment, similar windows and steps up to double 2-panel doors with raised panels and bolection moulding; these are flanked by pilasters with sunken panels supporting an entablature and pediment. To the left of the door is a Civic Society plaque "TO COMMEMORATE QUEEN VICTORIA'S GOLDEN JUBILEE" INTERIOR: the stone-flagged hall has an open-well, closed string Jacobean-style staircase with square moulded balusters, chamfered newels with moulded cornices and turned finials.
