GV II

Former carriage entrance and lodge, now shops. c1820s/30s. Limestone ashlar, painted to No.4 (right), slate roof hipped to the left. Entrance in severe Classical style. One-unit plans. EXTERIOR: single storey to No.5; 2 storeys to No.4 which has a cornice and blocking course and 3 windows to the 1st floor with C20 glazing partly obscured, and late C20 ground-floor shop front. No.5 to the left, the former carriage entrance, is stepped slightly forward. Plain pilasters and plinth; cornice and blocking course similar to No.4 frame the opening, now a shop front. Above the centre of the blocking course is a heavy panelled parapet with cornice and blocking course supporting a plinth inscribed "UNITY AND LOYALTY". Above this is a large pinnacle and 2 shields bearing the Chippenham Coat of Arms. INTERIOR: not inspected.
