GV II

Two shops. Dated 1908. Limestone ashlar, slate roof. Mannerist Classical style. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys; symmetrical 3-bay front. 12/2-pane sash windows to the upper floors, (6/1 to the sides of the bays). 4 wide pilasters, which have small recessed oramental panels with carved drops and cornices at the 4th floor, rise above a modillion cornice and parapet. Moulded coping to the pilasters and parapet. Over the central bay is a broken pediment with a modillion cornice and cartouche-framed shield in the tympanum. Below the modillion cornice each range has a full-height flat-roofed canted bay with a cornice. Windows to the 4th floor have aprons with guttae, aprons to the 3rd floor are shaped, those to the 1st floors are lost to the C20 shop fronts. INTERIOR: not inpected. Forms with No.21 (qv), a vigorously articulated example of early C20 commercial architecture.
