II
Town water tower. Built in 1902. Red brick in three stages with painted metal water tank above with bracketed eaves and pyramidal roof surmounted by wooden pyramidal louvre with metal weathervane. Square plan, battered to base. Three bays to each face. Main structure has machicolated eaves, stone string course above ground floor, plinth of black bricks and second and third stages have giant pilasters with impost blocks and blank arcading with keystones. Round-headed lancets with metal casements. Central round-headed doorcase with stone surround, colonnettes, round-headed fanlight and double door with six panels. The water tower is 77 feet high, contains 143,000 bricks and the tank at the top holds 50,000 gallons. During the Second World War the Home Guard kept its rifles in the building and the rifle racks are said to remain.
