GV II
House. C17 altered and extended c1800. Timber-framed,
plastered front right (west) flank wall end rear lean-to in
brown brick, Flemish bond, with some rendered and colourwashed
brick. Welsh slated roof with broad-eaves brown brick
chimneystacks left and right, with some clay ports.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, originally a 2-storey house, with a
central entry from street and 2 rooms; c1800 hall incorporated
into left-hand (east) sitting room, and rear lean-to with new
entrance hall added to give a double-depth plan. First floor
front has 3 flush-set 12-pane sash windows with architrave
surrounds, second floor 2 squat 6-pane sashes, left and right
ground floor with 3 flush-set 12-pane sashes with shallow
moulded cornices below continuous band at first-floor level.
INTERIOR: sitting room has mid C19 white marble fireplace with
cast-iron hob grate, some crown glass to sash windows of
front, 4 panelled oak doors to dining and sitting rooms. Rear
staircase with stick balusters and moulded handrail around
landing. First floor has chamfered and tongue longitudinal
beams in front bedrooms. Central staircase to second floor has
column on vase balusters, square newels and moulded handrails.
Exposed horizontal plate around perimeter wall 600mm
above-floor level. Cellar beneath front range brick walled and
brick floored with basement windows to front; recessed arched
shelving below chimneystack on east wall.
Home of William Archer (1754-1833), merchant, miller and
entrepreneur, manufacturer of linseed oil.
