(Formerly Listed as:
THE WASH
No.8)

GV II

House, now shop with offices above (first and second floors
numbered 6A and accessible through No.6 adjoining). Late C16,
altered C18 and C19. Plastered Welsh slated gambrel roof, with
casement windows to front gable, jettied slightly forward of
facade.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attics, gable end faces street. First
floor with flush timber south window with glazing bars,
apparently replacing 3-light mullion and transom casement.
Second floor with slightly recessed timber sash window with
glazing bars, ground floor with plain C20 timber shopfront
with plate glass windows, set in front of jetty with bressumer
visible within.
INTERIOR: much altered, but post and beam, with mortices for
missing brace on first floor suggests a late C16 structure of
2 bays (possibly a cross wing), extended rearwards and
heightened C18 when gambrel formed.
(Forrester H: Timber-framed buildings in Hertford and Ware:
Hitchin: 1964-: 24).
