House. Mid C16, with C17 additions, mid and late C19 internal
alterations. Red brick, Flemish bond, gabled old tiled roofs,
with fretted scalloped barge boards on gables of north-east
wing. Red brick chimneystacks on main roof with oversailing
caps and long orange clay pots. Tall yellow brick stack above
plastered external chimneybreast at left. 2 bay C16 crosswing
at left, to which a long C17 wing was added at right
(south-east) probably originally with lobby entry; interior
much altered mid C19, with large north-east wing constructed.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. South-west elevation has
gables at left, centre and right, centre with 3-light wood
attic casement incorporating earlier iron casement, all with
small panes. First floor has 4 wood casement windows with
small panes, that in centre gable 4-light; ground floor with 3
4-light small-paned wood casement windows, doorway right of
centre with C19 door, upper half glazed in earlier C19 fluted
surround, with cornice hood on C18 profiled brackets, possibly
reset.
Flank south-east elevation dark-stained weatherboarded on
first floor.
North-east elevation has 4-light casement above late C19
5-light rectangular mullion and transom bay, with leaded
transom lights, and heavy moulded cornice, projecting red
brick large C19 gable to right, with long mullion and transom
landing window. Main north-east projecting gable wing centre
right with large triple sash windows beneath red rubbed brick
arches, with blue brick impost and sill bands, 4:12:4 panes
first floor, 5:15:5 panes ground floor.
INTERIOR: hall has heavy chamfered beam with tongue stop in
ceiling, panelled walls, some C18, most C19. Fireplace red
brick with outer stone surround with Tuscan pilasters and
heavy ornamental moulded panels with raised centres, dentil
frieze. Stair C19 newel construction, open well, newels with
urns and flat moulded caps, open string, hardwood treads and
moulded handrail. Chinese pattern stick balusters. 2-bay
north-west room in cross wing has uneven plastered ceiling.
First floor bedrooms mainly with C19 features; north-west
bedrooms in cross wing has exposed jowled C16 posts with
filled mortices for arch bracing, now removed. 2-panel door,
fireplace with Regency cast-iron grate and early C18 wood


surround with heavy bolection moulding. Winder stair to attics
with wide boarded floors, plank doors, ceiled at collar level,
upper roof structure not visible and not accessible.
