Pauline Payne Whitney Paget Memorial
in St Mary's Churchyard

Memorial. c1920, to Pauline Payne Whitney Paget. Portland
stone, with red brick stone coped dwarf surrounding walls.
Sculpture of Virgin Mary and Child, with the infant St John,
below a canopy supported by 2 Tuscan Doric columns in antis,
frieze inscribed 'Pro patria', cornice hood with moulded
brackets. Curved screens with Tuscan antae, frieze and coping,
with wrought-iron screen with roundel. Plinth of sculpture
inscribed 'To the memory of Almeric Hugh Paget, first Baron
Queenborough, 1861-1949'. Stepped forecourt to memorial
defined with brick dwarf walls. Inset stone tablets records
'Pauline Payne Whitney Paget, daughter of William Collins
Whitney sometime secretary of the US Navy, 1874-1916', and
that 'Almeric Hugh Paget placed the memorial in memory of
Pauline Paget Whitney'. Inset into the limestone slab in front
of the sculpture are lead figures of soldiers and sailors from
the First World War, with the inscription 'PAVLINE' in Roman
capitals.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the artist of this important memorial has not
been traced. It is evident that Pauline Payne Whitney Paget
died as a result of her wartime voluntary work. Her daughter,
Dorothy Paget became famous as a racehorse owner and is buried
nearby. The memorial is situated in the extreme south-east
corner of the churchyard.
