GV II

House, now subdivided as two shops with showrooms above. Early
C18, with C19 and C20 alterations. Red brick, Flemish bond,
old tiled roof, originally 'M' double roof. Square yellow
brick chimneystack on ridge right of centre. 4-bay front
facade, with position of central chimney suggesting a lobby
entry plan, but evidence in building obscured by later
alterations and C19 subdivision into 2 properties.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. First floor has 4 flush-set
12-pane sash windows with architrave surrounds, closely spaced
with wide jambs at left and right. Ground floor has full
length C20 shop window at left, adapted from C19 window,
retaining pierced cast-iron vent panel above. Twin leaf glazed
doors in frame with beaded jambs, reeded top rail and blocked
fanlight, full width fascia above access to No.36. To right is
flush-set 16-pane sash window, with blank window recess to
right; far right altered late C19 shopfront with plate glass
window above stuccoed stallriser, plain timber surround, three
quarter glazed door, fascia board and blind box. Roof with 2
box casement dormers at front and rear, above deep C20 fascia
with modillioned eaves cornice.
Rear elevation has 3 mullion and transom windows with
small-paned casements and dead lights, blocked opening for a
fourth can be seen in centre adjacent to a small C20 6-pane
casement at high level. Ground floor pushed out into
slate-roofed timber and weatherboarded rear outshuts with
slate roofs, single storey at left (east), long narrow
2-storey, with black weatherboarded end, at right.
INTERIOR: much altered and opened out, chamfered beam with
tongue stop in centre of ceiling of ground floor room of
No.36; No.38 appears to have had 2, possibly 3 large rooms and
has large fireplace with C18 surround, oak bressumer, brick
C19 inner grate with moulded brick corbels. Newel dogleg
winder stair alongside fire. First floor has 4-panel doors,
large square upper and lower, and 2 small centre panels, with
small bolection mouldings and H-hinges.
Roof completely renewed in sawn timber with 'M' valley
replaced by a central crown flat. Cellar with plastered
vaulted tunnel at west, with fire alongside newel stair to
ground floor.
