GV II
House, now with ground floor shop and flat over. Early/mid
C18, with C20 alterations. Red brick front, Flemish bond with
some overburnt grey headers, plastered right-hand side and
rear, pebbledashed left-hand side. Old tiled double gabled 'M'
roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. Front has 2 flush set sash
windows, with glazing bars in upper sash only, with moulded
architrave surrounds. First-floor level plat band, ground
floor now with central mid C20 shopfront with glazed door and
multi-pane window replacing former window and 6-fielded
panelled door under hood on consoles (already noted as removed
at time of survey for 1973 list).
Roof with gabled casement dormer left of centre; with high
central valley parallel to street, and with deep moulded wood
cornice on street facade, 2 tall red brick chimneystacks with
projecting band and 3 long orange clay pots, at left.
Rear has 2-storey Victorian 2-sash bay window, and long narrow
single storey weatherboarded outshoot with old tile roof.
INTERIOR: several rooms retain C18 moulded wood cornices, with
panelled dados in first- and ground-floor front rooms, C19 and
early C20 grates and surrounds. Newel stair with moulded close
string, with urn and barleysugar twist balusters and moulded
handrail and simple panelled dado, continues to attics with
plain stick balusters.
HISTORICAL NOTE: this house was occupied by Lord Salisbury's
agent during C18: the Gascoyne Cecil family had extensive
property holdings in the town, eg. Cecil House, No.52 nearby
(qv).
