Group of 6 headstones approx 41m SE
of church tower of Church of All
Saints
GV II
Group of 6 headstones. Late C18 and early C19. Carved Portland
stone. Variants of the same design, each with a head with a
border of carved Rococo scrollwork, with a central segmental
arched top, with raised urns and swags. Square lower panels,
with raised border to circular and oval inner panels,
spandrels with raised Adam style fans and carved raised putti
heads. The stones commemorate members of the Cherry family
between 1785 and 1826, and include Benjamin Cherry (d.1785 aet
74), Alderman and 4 times mayor of Hertford, Sarah Cherry
(d.1810 aet 75), Benjamin Cherry (1765-1871), Town Clerk of
Hertford, John Cherry (d.1826 aet 52), Mary Cherry, and Louisa
Sarah Ann Cherry (daughter of John and Mary, d.1825 aet 22).
Incised inscriptions worn, but recorded in Turnor (1830). A
fine group of headstones from the same, unknown monumental
mason.
