GV II
Drinking fountain. 1890, reconstructed from fragments of the
former Hertford Church of St Mary the Less which were found on
the site during the construction of the Library in 1880. The
church was built before 1210 and destroyed before 1552.
The structure is clunch stone, consisting of a base, with a
small pointed arch with crude roll mouldings above a drainage
recess, projecting band with central stoup, and tablet with
central tap, above which is a rebuilt C13 lancet with
colonnettes with bell caps, and a roll moulded outer arch, and
inner reveal with continuous dog tooth ornament, and chamfered
jambs to the opening.
A tablet set in the base of the lancet opening records the
history of the structure which was erected by public
subscription.
