GV II
House, now offices and flat. Late C17, altered and extended
early C19 and C20. Stucco, and brown and colourwashed brick,
Flemish bond, old tiled roof with parapeted ends. Welsh
slated, hipped over large rear outshut, stuccoed and yellow
brick chimneystacks.
EXTERIOR: first floor and ground floor front have 3 wood
casement windows with Gothick lancet traceried heads, 3:2:3
lights, first floor plat band, basement windows enclosed by
railings with cast-iron fleur-de-lys heads and lotus bud
shafts. Right (south) flank elevation to Queens Road has brick
outer gable wall, with crow stepping and slate copings, and
forward projecting 1 storey castellated porch, stuccoed with
dripmould raised over Tudor arched doorway with recessed twin
leaf moulded panelled and nailed doors. 3 gabled casement
dormers.
Rear outshut with large 2-storey canted bay window with
flush-set 12-pane sashes on first floor and Gothick tracery
headed French windows with margin glazing on ground floor.
INTERIOR: ground floor much altered in conversion to surgery
in 1950s; west front room has C18 panelling with double cyma
wood cornice, and C19 fireplace with fluted pilaster strips
and paterae. East middle room, subdivided, retains plaster
coved cornice with reeded band on ceiling. Rear former dining
room has higher ceiling and elaborate cornice with lotus buds
and flattened mouldings. Basement with brick floor and brick
walls, with reset medieval timber beams. Stair to first floor
from porch entrance from Queen Street, early C20 with
elongated swelling column balusters and hardwood rail. Attics
in 3 sections with C17/C18 panelled and plank doors with 'H'
hinges, ceiled at collar level, roof not accessible.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron, arrowhead area railings to
front.
