Former town wall extending NW of Silver Street to rear of 28-34 (not included)

The Town Wall forming the rear curtilage of Nos 28-34)

Former town wall. Early C12, with later rebuilding. Coursed,
squared limestone rubble. 4-metre section at north end,
probably mid C17 and representing either part of Civil War
defences or communal rebuild after demolition in 1646; at the
south end is a section rebuilt in mid C20 concrete block and
then an approx 16-metre medieval section built on natural
limestone outcrop; at this junction is a former icehouse,
probably C17 and built of coursed and squared blocks; at the
south end of this latter section a later wall is returned at
right angles to the river; the main section of the wall is
continued southwards, and is finished by a length in C18
Flemish bond brick.
