ST9387 MILL LANE 758-1/2/259 (North side) 01/07/76 Section of former town wall and 2 towers (Formerly Listed as: ABBEY ROW (North side) Town wall and 2 towers attached to garden of the Old Bell to the N of the Hotel)
GV II
Town wall with 2 towers. Probably C17. Coursed limestone rubble, including some reused medieval masonry and ashlar to upper section of one tower. Section of approx 30m of former curtain wall including a rectangular tower on W side, and hollow canted tower to E partially rebuilt in dry stone work. HISTORICAL NOTE: traditionally thought to have been the town wall built by Roger of Salisbury, c1136-9, but the masonry is now not considered to be substantial enough in date to be medieval. Site of sally port ramp from the castle, incorporated into the town defences after 1246. The walling is most probably part of the Civil War defences, the towers being part of the hornwork. (Report by Keystone Historic Building Consultants: 1994-).
