Pair of houses. C17, altered C19. Rendered limestone rubble, central brick ridge stack and stone slate roof. 2-room plan with lobby entrance and rear extension. Each of 2 storeys and attic; 1-window range. Left-hand doorways, No.2 with a 6-panel door, 3-light mullion windows, and gabled dormer with horned 3/3-pane sash, No.4 a half glazed door with 2-light ground-floor casement and 2/2-pane first-floor sash. INTERIOR: details of No.4 include a single-bay collar truss roof with yoked ridge and tenoned purlins, 2 ground-floor axial beams with 3 inch chamfers, a winder stair to the rear of a large, deep, and covered-over fireplace, with a first-floor scratch-moulded 6-panel C17 door at the top with strap hinges. No.2 not inspected, reported as having a blocked Tudor window in the party wall (see Tower House, qv), and chamfered ceiling beams. HISTORICAL NOTE: until c1800 the Shoe Public House.
