House, now Methodist holiday centre. 1840s, extended c1870. Attributed to Webster of Kendal. Painted roughcast with some limestone dressings and slate roof. PLAN AND EXTERIOR: earliest part of house T-plan, of 2 storeys plus attic, with a south facade which is almost symmetrical and of 3 bays with the central bay projecting under a gable with shaped bargeboards. The windows have tall chamfered surrounds and paired glazing bar sashes separated by timber mullions. The upper sashes have rounded heads. The windows to the central bay have hood moulds, and there is a continuous 1st-floor sill band. The central bay has a shallow attic window. The central chimney has a limestone cap. Adjoining to the left is a taller gabled wing added later in the C19, with a 2-storey bay window which retains its ground-floor mullions but has a C20 casement on the 1st floor. The additions at this side of the house include a tower towards the rear, of 3 storeys plus attic under a pyramid roof. The right-hand (east) gable wall of the original house includes a 2-storey limestone canted bay window and has shaped and pierced bargeboards. The rear wing has 3-window range facing east in a similar style. To the left is a C20 lean-to glass porch, which also covers the entrance doorway in the rear wall of the main range. This has a deeply-chamfered stone surround with hood mould. INTERIOR: the right-hand front room contains a white marble fireplace which was formerly in a 1st floor bedroom. The left-hand room has a similar fireplace, now covered with paint and disused. The entrance hall has a plaster frieze with laurel wreaths. The 1st-floor landing in the earlier part of the house is lit by a lantern light with painted glass, and the staircase has an iron balustrade. Timber double doors open off a lower half-landing and lead to a second stair hall in the western wing, which appears to be a later C19 addition. The doors contain painted glass, and their surround is deeply moulded on the western side. This second stair has an open well and is of pine, with arched heads to the openings between balusters. The further large extensions are not of special architectural
interest.
