Pair of houses. c1793. For Francis Basset, Lord De Dunstanville, and No.2 (right) let to Captain Couse 1793-1799. Granite ashlar basement, otherwise brick fronted (No.1 painted); dry slate roof to No.1, asbestos slate to No.2; brick end stacks and 4 C20 roof dormers. Double-depth plan. 2 storeys plus later attics over basement; each house with symmetrical 5-window front. Painted quoins, mid-floor string; rosettes and triglyphs to eaves cornice. Keyblocks to flat brick arches over late C19 or C20 2-pane horned sashes. Each house has original round-arched central doorway with open pediment and Roman Doric fluted half-columns and spoked fanlights over 6-panel doors. INTERIOR of No.2 has good quality original and early C19 features: heavy moulded cornice to left-hand room; eared chimney-piece to right-hand room; open-well open-string staircase with stick balusters; some moulded cornices with bands, window shutters and panelled doors. No.1 not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: rubble and brick front garden walls, with renewed plain railings to front, and mid C19 wrought-iron gates with fleur-de-lis finials. HISTORY: Captain Charles Couse had married a local girl, Catherine Bell, the daughter of the Packet Agent George Bell (Bell's Court, qv). Subsequently he was appointed Captain of the Packet Ship Walsingham and later the Roebuck. He was later dismissed from the Packet Service and had to leave this house. (1993-).
