GV II

Shop with accommodation above. Mid C19 with earlier remains. Stucco with slate roof and brick chimney cap. The east gable wall faces Market Place and is of 2 storeys plus attic. The ground floor is occupied by a mid C19 shop front with 2 engaged Greek Doric columns, a projecting timber cornice, and a fascia with an attached modern sign-board. The two 1st-floor windows are sashed without glazing bars and have plain reveals and projecting sills. The single attic window is similar, but has a round-arched head. It is partly within the gable, which has overhanging bracketed verges. The projecting timber gutters of the side walls return, giving the gable the appearance of an open pediment. A chimney cap rises from the apex of the gable. HISTORICAL NOTE: although the building appears externally to be C19, a painting of the Market Place c1780 shows a brick building of the same shape, number of storeys, window position, and chimney position. (Bardsley CW: Chronicles of the Town and Church of Ulverston: Ulverston: 1885-: 7 (FACING)).
