SK54SE WAVERLEY STREET 646-1/4/695 Pedestrian subway, railings and walls on east side of Arboretum

II

Pedestrian subway under Addison Street, spanning a walk in the Arboretum, and adjoining railings and walls. 1851-52. By Henry Moses Wood, Corporation Surveyor. Rockfaced stone, with ashlar dressings and cast-iron railings. Gothic Revival style. Tunnel with four-centred arch, approx 20m long, flanked by buttresses. Moulded sill. Low parapet walls with chamfered coping, topped with a spiked cast-iron railing, approx 20m long. Beyond, on each side, boundary walls parallel to Addison Street, approx 100m long. South of the subway, a pedestrian gateway with ashlar piers. Part of the original scheme of the Arboretum, laid out 1851-52 by Samuel Curtis of London.
