SK54SE WAVERLEY STREET 646-1/4/687 (North East side) Gateway, screen walls and railings at south-west entrance to Arboretum
GV II
Gateway, screen walls and railings to Arboretum. 1851-52. By Henry Moses Wood, Corporation Surveyor. Ashlar, cast and wrought-iron. Tudor Revival style. Triple gateway with 4 panelled octagonal piers topped with ogee domes and finials. Original wrought-iron gates. On each side, serpentine screen walls, approx. 10m long, with plinth and moulded coping. End piers identical to the gate piers. To left, cast-iron spiked railing running approx 400m along Waverley Street to the north west entrance. Part of the original architectural scheme of the Arboretum, laid out 1850-52 by Samuel Curtis of London. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Nottinghamshire: London: 1979-: 240).
