NOTTINGHAM SK54SE TREVOSE GARDENS

Church of St Martin (Sherwood) II Parish church. Dated 1937. By Heazell & Sons of Nottingham.
Buff brick, with brick and reconstituted stone dressings and
Roman tile roofs. Byzantine style.
PLAN: nave and chancel under continuous roof, apse, vestry,
north chapel, aisles, organ chamber, narthex.
EXTERIOR: triglyph frieze, coped east gable, side wall stack.
Narthex, chapel and aisles have tile coping to flat roofs.
Mainly round-arched windows and openings with rebated
surrounds. Chancel has 3 windows on each side. Apse,
half-domed, has a window to north and south. Nave has 3
clerestory windows on each side. West end has dentillated
eaves and a round window with mullions forming a Maltese
cross. Vestry, to south-east, single storey, has flat roof and
coped parapet. To south, round-arched door flanked by triple
windows with flat heads and brick mullions. To east, 3
windows, one round-headed.
North east chapel has 2 east windows and 3 to north. Hipped
organ chamber and porch, to north, has a double door with
fanlight. North aisle has 2 pairs of windows. South aisle has
2 paired windows, with a single window to east and at east
end.
Narthex, single storey, has 3 round-arched glazed openings to
west, and double doorways with fanlights to north and south.
INTERIOR rendered, with rendered barrel vault and exposed
brick arches, pilasters and piers. Plain round arch to apse,
and round-arched piscina. Chancel has a 3-bay arcade on each
side, with square piers, and doorways at the east ends. To
west a marble screen wall incorporating pulpit and reading
desk. To north-west, an arched recess containing organ console
and pipes. Nave arcades, 3 bays, have a narrower west bay, and
square piers with ashlar capitals. Chapel has king post roof
on corbels, and patterned stained glass east windows. Aisles
have cross arches and round-arched doorways to east. South
aisle has doors into vestry. Narthex has 3 round-arched
openings into the church, with imposts and glazed doors.
Fittings include original panelled stalls and desks.
